Overview
- Nutrition North Canada (NNC) provided over $15 million in subsidy during October, November and December 2012. Ten foods subsidized at the program's higher subsidy level accounted for more than half this amount: meat, fresh milk, bread, poultry, eggs, frozen potato products and fresh potatoes, yogurt, citrus and bananas. These foods were also among the most subsidized items during the same period in 2011–2012.
- Of the products subsidized at the lower subsidy level, pizza, ice cream, unsweetened juice (containers of more than 250 ml) and perishable combination foods received the most subsidy during the quarter. This is similar to what was reported for the 3rd quarter of 2011–2012.
- NNC provided relatively the same amount of subsidy during the 3rd quarter of 2012–2013 compared to the same period in 2011–2012. A slight decrease of 0.6% was recorded due to the end of the transition period from the previous program (Food Mail) in October when non-food items and most non-perishable foods became ineligible for a subsidy. There has been an increase of 6% in subsidy towards food items that are still eligible.
