Overview
- Nutrition North Canada (NNC) provided over $17.9 million in subsidy during January, February and March 2017. This represents an increase of 9.9% compared to the same period in 2015-2016. In October 2016, 37 communities were added to the program which explains the greater increase this year compare to the previous years. Ten foods subsidized at the program's higher subsidy level accounted for more than three quarter of this amount: all fresh fruits, milk, all fresh vegetables, meat, bread, frozen potato products, yogurt, eggs, poultry and UHT milk.
- Of the products subsidized at the lower subsidy level, pizza, unsweetened juice (containers of more than 250 ml), ice cream, perishable combination foods and crackers received the most subsidy during the quarter. This is similar to what was reported for the 4th quarter of 2015-2016.
- The quarterly report takes into account the addition, as of October 1, 2016, of 37 new communities eligible to a full subsidy per kilogram. This represents 14.0% of the total kilograms shipped by air for this quarter.
