Overview
- Nutrition North Canada (NNC) provided over $22.1 million in subsidy during April, May and June 2019. This represents an increase of 20.4% compared to the same period last year.
- The new highest subsidy level, or the targeted subsidy, accounted for 14% of total subsidy spending this quarter.
- The ten foods subsidized at the program's high level accounted for more 70% of the subsidy, all fresh fruits, all fresh vegetables, meat, bread, frozen potato products, yogurt, eggs, poultry and unsweetened juice of 250ml and less, and ultra-high-temperature (UHT) milk.
- Of the products subsidized at the lowest subsidy level, unsweetened juice (containers of more than 250 ml), pizza, ice cream, cream and cream cheese, and bacon received the most subsidy during the quarter. This is similar to what was reported for the 1st quarter of 2018 to 2019.
