Overview
- Nutrition North Canada (NNC) provided over $22.4 million in subsidy during July, August and September 2019. This represents an increase of 22.1% compared to the same period last year.
- In August 2019, the new seasonal transportation subsidy, meant to subsidized items transported into communities on either sea barges or on ice roads began.
- The highest subsidy level, or the targeted subsidy, accounted for 16% of total subsidy spending this quarter.
- The medium level subsidy (the former highest level) accounted for 74% of subsidized dollars. The top ten foods subsidized at this level are – all fresh fruits, all fresh vegetables, meat, bread, frozen potato products, yogurt, eggs, unsweetened juice of 250ml and less, poultry, and ultra-high-temperature (UHT) milk.
- The lowest level subsidy accounted for 8% of all subsidized dollars. The top 5 items at this level were – fresh and frozen pizza, unsweetened juice (containers of more than 250 ml), ice cream, fresh and frozen combination food, and cream and cream cheese.
