Nutrition North Canada (NNC) provided over $34 million in subsidy during April, May and June of 2021. This represents an increase of 6% compared to the same period last year.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic NNC received $25 million in extra funding to increase the high and medium subsidy rates. The Program also began to subsidize products typically reserved for air-only communities.
The program now subsidizes personal hygiene products and household cleaning essentials.
The highest subsidy level, or the targeted subsidy, accounted for 14% of total subsidy spending this quarter. This level targets frozen fruits, frozen vegetables, fresh milk and infant formula/food.
The ten foods subsidized at the program's medium level accounted for 76% of subsidy - fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, meat, frozen potato products, yogurt, bread, unsweetened juice of 250ml and less, eggs, poultry and unsweetened bread products.
The top foods subsidized at the program's lowest level accounted for about 9% of the subsidy – unsweetened juice (containers of more than 250 ml), pizza, ice cream, canned vegetables, fresh and frozen combination foods.
