2021 to 2022: 3rd quarter (October, November, December 2021)
Table of contents
Overview
- Nutrition North Canada (NNC) provided over $35 million in subsidy during October, November, and December 2021. This represents a decrease of 4% compared to the same period last year.
- Due to COVID-19, and the pressures the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns brought onto the supply chain and communities, NNC received $25 million in extra funding to increase two subsidy rates (medium and high) and allow all NNC communities to access goods usually reserved for air-only communities. These products are now open to all communities and are no longer tracked as an individual category.
- The program now subsidizes personal hygiene products and household cleaning essentials.
- The highest subsidy level, or the targeted subsidy, accounted for 15% of total subsidy spending this quarter. The level targets frozen fruits, frozen vegetables, fresh milk and infant formula/food.
- The ten foods subsidized at the program's medium level accounted for 77% of subsidy - all fresh fruits, meat, all fresh vegetables, frozen potato products, poultry, yogurt, bread, eggs, unsweetened juice (containers of 250ml and less), and UHT milk.
- The top foods subsidized at the program's lowest level accounted for about 8% of the subsidy – pizza, unsweetened juice (containers of more than 250 ml), ice cream, fresh and frozen combination foods, and canned vegetables.
