2022 to 2023: 2nd quarter (July, August, September 2022)
Table of contents
Overview
- Nutrition North Canada (NNC) provided over $30 million in subsidy during July, August, and September 2022. This represents a decrease of 7% compared to the same period last year.
- Due to COVID-19, and the pressures the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns brought onto the supply chain and communities, NNC received $25 million in extra funding to increase two subsidy rates (medium and high) and allow all NNC communities to access goods usually reserved for air-only communities. These products are now open to all communities and are no longer tracked as an individual category.
- The program now subsidizes personal hygiene products and household cleaning essentials.
- The highest subsidy level, or the targeted subsidy, accounted for 13% of total subsidy spending this quarter. The level targets frozen fruits, frozen vegetables, fresh milk and infant formula/food.
- The ten foods subsidized at the program’s medium level accounted for 66% of subsidy - all fresh fruits, meat, all fresh vegetables, frozen potato products, bread, yogurt, eggs, unsweetened juice ( 250ml and less), poultry and unsweetened bread products.
- The top foods subsidized at the program’s lowest level accounted for about 19% of the subsidy – pizza, unsweetened juice (containers of more than 250 ml), ice cream, canned vegetables, fresh and frozen combination foods.

Product categories are listed in descending order based on the amount of subsidy. The category that received the highest amount of subsidy is listed first, followed by the category that received the second highest amount of subsidy, and so on. Numbers in the table are preliminary. Values are subject to change.
